A NEW voice has been added to the opposition of future housing development in Okehampton. The Okehampton and District branch of the Senior Council for Devon has voiced 'major concerns', stating that the proposed development of 900 new homes, under West Devon Borough Council's Local Development Framework, is 'inappropriate' for Okehampton. In responding to the borough council's core strategy, the senior council concluded that they would prefer to see all the development to the east of the town. In deciding this, they took into consideration the traffic problems involved with developments to the west and north of Okehampton and raised concerns over development within the downstream influence of the Meldon Reservoir and dam. Further concerns aired by the senior council included the need for improved infrastructure, for improved public transport and the fact that the borough council's core strategy makes no provision for the expansion of Okehampton College. The senior council for Devon is a focus group for the voice of people aged 50 plus in policy development and servicing planning. It aims to realise the potential in later life as a creative and active resource for communities across the county. The Okehampton branch of the senior council covers a population of around 20,000 people within the area covered by West Devon Borough Council.
