A West Devon Borough Council initiative to hold regular ?surgeries? in rural communities and help residents take up different services has been such a success that a series of new dates has been set for Hatherleigh. At a new venue, the surgery will be held in the town?s market on the first and third Tuesday of every month up until September 18. The initiative to bring agencies under one umbrella to provide the surgeries, has been led by the council, which is rolling out similar events to other rural communities in the borough. At the first surgery in the market, on Tuesday July 3, the council?s customer service advisers will be joined by an environmental health officer who will be giving information on the current smoke-free legislation. And there will be information about the 5x30 project which will be promoting the sports and fitness festival, Job Centre Plus and the community banking organisation Devon Pound. On July 17, the surgery will include a lightbulb amnesty from Devon Energy Efficiency Advice team. They will exchange up to four ordinary light bulbs for energy saving bulbs for a charge of just 30p to cover the cost of recycling. The event is supported by EDF energy. Hatherleigh Community Beat Officer WPC Jo May will also be attending. Further sessions are expected to include other agencies as well as West Devon Borough Council. Cllr Dennis Bater, the borough councillor who represents Hatherleigh, said: ?I?m delighted that the council is bringing out its services to the town and I hope that residents make the very most of what the event will offer them. ?They must use it and I think those that do will be very surprised at the services they may not be aware of.?
