THE new housing development off Plymouth Road in Tavistock is to be named after former Tavistock mayor and town councillor Norna Beadle.

The developers of the previous Biffa site had suggested the name Meadow View, but there were three objections to this.

Royal Mail said there was already a Meadow View, Meadow Court and Meadow Brook in the town, which may lead to confusion. They suggested Beadle Court, after Miss Beadle.

Tavistock Town Council also objected to the name Meadow View because of the existing addresses with ?meadow?. They felt the name could cause confusion as there was no meadow view from the site.

The town council also proposed naming the development Beadle Court, Miss Beadle being the only Honoured Burgess not to have a street named in her honour. ?Court? would support the design and type of development, they suggested.

A ward member felt the name Beadle Close would be more suitable than Meadow View, again to honour the town burgess, who died last year.

At West Devon Borough Council?s environment and health committee meeting recently it was agreed the name of the development should be Beadle Court.

Tavistock deputy town clerk Rosie Kehoe said the town council was pleased West Devon had seen the opportunity to honour Norna Beadle and uphold her works to the town.

?We thought it would be an appropriate time to honour her,? she said.
