MEADOWLANDS Leisure Centre, in Tavistock has funded a coach, Chris Gallie, for its disabled swimming group after its growing success during the first eight weeks of the programme. The group runs every Wednesday from 11am until noon.

Helen McFarlane, a senior support worker and supporter of the disabled swimming group, has played a big role in securing the funding for a coach for the next eight weeks of the programme.

Chris Gallie, who also coaches the adult learning programme, has contributed to a rise in participants of the disabled swimming programme, with many choosing to participate for her coaching skills alone.

She, said: 'I'm thrilled to be coaching the disabled swimming group for the next eight weeks. The group is a fantastic bunch and it gives me a great feeling at the end of each session to know that I have taught them lifelong skills and increased their confidence in the water.'

Dave Smith, business manager at Meadowlands Leisure Centre, said: 'The disabled swimming programme has been a fantastic addition to our timetable. At first attendance was quite low but gradually the numbers have increased. I think the Paralympics has had a huge affect, especially with the success of Team GB's Ellie Simmonds. If the programme continues to be a success we hope that it will go on to be a permanent fixture on our timetable.'
