OKEHAMPTON is set to receive new cycle stands as part of a countywide cycle parking scheme funded by Devon County Council (DCC).
The scheme is in its early stages of development, however, DDC has already constructed plans and asked Okehampton Town Council for their views on potential stand locations in the town.
DCC has proposed to consider locations on Fore Street, George Street, and two sites at the train station.
Stuart Hughes, a Devon County Council cabinet member with the responsibility for cycling, said: ‘As part of a countywide cycle parking project, we’re considering four potential locations in Okehampton.
‘These proposals are in the early stages of discussion and we have asked Okehampton Town Council for their views on stands in Fore Street, George Street, and two possible sites at the train station.
‘Construction details and costs are yet to be drawn up but the aim would be to install the cycle parking at approved locations in the coming months.’
At Okehampton Town Council meeting last week the proposed cycle stands were discussed. Councillors were in agreement that the stands were a good idea, however had concerns about a proposed location outside of Red Lion Yard and near the town hall.
Okehampton Town Council clerk Paul Snell said: ‘Not all of the suggested sites were considered suitable by the council, but an alternative site at Jacob’s Pool/George Street was suggested for further investigation.’
Okehampton Town Mayor Cllr Jan Goffey said: ‘In general the council approves of plans for new cycle stands but in terms of a stand situated right outside of Red Lion Yard — we say no thank you.’
Cllr Christine Marsh added: ‘I would welcome new cycle stands in the town, however I think the town council needs to ask DCC for more details including what colour the stands will be. I think a dark blue to match our town colours or a dark green to match our bridges would be appropriate.’
Town councillors Tony Leech and Julie Yelled also suggested that the cycle stands should include an electrical source for the increasing amount of electric-powered bikes in the town.
Once Devon County Council has received and considered feedback, Okehampton residents can expect to see new cycle stands in the town in the very near future.
