AN exhibition of photographs and words, telling of the lost history linking Poland and Britain can be seen in Tavistock and Okehampton next month,
The Two Stories exhibition has been designed by Devon photographer and writer Susan Young, who uses photographic art to describe events that are little known in Britain.
Her aim is to explore the lost history linking Poland and Britain and correct misconceptions held here about Poland and its past.
The images are some of the last photographs to be taken at Ilford Park, Newton Abbot, before its demolition. Stover Camp, as it was originally known, was the last Polish resettlement camp remaining in the UK.
The photographs of the derelict camp are chosen to illustrate in a symbolic fashion, little known events: the invasion of Poland by the Soviets in 1939 and Britain's controversial role in the aftermath.
Archive photographs are used to describe the happier story of life in resettlement camps and the final group of photographs complete the circle by telling the stories of some Polish entrants to the UK, both past and present.
The exhibition is supported by Devon County Council, Torbay Council and Plymouth City Council together with many galleries, museums and individuals. It has been funded by UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, a charity which provides the world's largest programme of support to individuals in setting up ventures with a positive social impact. Each year, UnLtd provides support to more than 1,000 individuals based in the UK.
Susan Young has also written a novel, 'The Ultimate Defiance', which is based on the events described in the exhibition. The book tells the dramatic story of a woman and her two young daughters as individually they struggle to survive the Soviet invasion.
A gallery form of the Two Stories exhibition is at Okehampton Museum of Dartmoor Life from May 15 to May 29. Admission to the exhibition is £1.50 and includes the booklet accompanying it.
A mobile form of the exhibition visits Tavistock Library from May 22 to June 19.
