AN evening of live music is being held in Tavistock next week, to raise much needed funds for a charity helping children in South America.
The Santa Rosa Fund, based in Tavistock, has successfully raised enough money to build a library for the Santa Rosa School in Managua, Nicaragua — but the building has no books or resources.
June Mowforth, Santa Rosa Fund secretary, said: 'We may think our education system needs greater funding, but imagine classes of 60 pupils, not enough chairs to sit on, few resources to work with and teachers on a salary of $50 per month.'
June said the money for the library was raised through the Ben Dalton memorial fund and the British Embassy — the Santa Rosa Fund also holds regular events to raise money for equipment at the hard pressed school.
June said: 'The library is a great advance for the school — the Fund is now working to raise extra money to purchase books.'
The first event will be held at the Ordulph Arms in Tavistock on Friday February 22 at 8pm, when Rock and Soul will be playing live.
There will be a bar and raffle — admission is free but donations towards books, which cost about £2, would be greatly appreciated.
The Santa Rosa Fund is supported by about 100 households locally but also has supporters throughout the UK, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Australia.
