MUSIC fans in West Devon could soon be tuning in to a brand new radio station broadcasting from the Bere Peninsula.

The aptly named Peninsula Radio is the brainchild of three teenagers from Bere Ferrers, who are now trying to drum up funding to get the station off the ground.

Dan Walker, 18, Alex Worrall, 17, and Louis Ormston, 16, need to raise more than £2,500 for equipment such as a transmitter and aerial, and to cover licensing costs.

Dan, a student at Tavistock College, hopes Peninsula Radio will bring popular music, local news and events to the community.

'People in the village like the idea and they're being really supportive,' he said. 'We're asking local people if they want to do their own show, so hopefully we should end up with DJs who appeal to different musical tastes.

'We've already got someone lined up to do a show playing classic rock.

'Alex's uncle works in telecommunications and he has sorted out the licensing side of things for us, but we still need to pay for it.'

The budding media moguls are currently trying to find suitable locations for their studio and mast, while they await the outcome of an application for funding from Awards for All.

Peninsula Radio would reach an audience within a five-mile radius of the studio, transmitting on an FM-band.

Louis, who is studying music production and sound engineering at college, said the station would aim to be at the heart of the community.

The idea of Peninsula Radio stemmed from his hobby as a DJ at local discos and club nights.

'The point of the station is that it will be made by people in the community for people in the community,' he said.

'There should be something for everyone — I'm just fanatical about music of all different kinds. I'll play anything from dance and rock to classical music.'

Dan said the search was on for at least ten more budding presenters for Peninsular Radio.

'Louis is going to be doing most of the broadcasts,' he explained. 'He's our production director and main presenter, I'm the manager and Alex is our technician.

'But we still need volunteers to host their own shows. They don't have to be interested in music, because we need things like talkshows and discussions as well.'

He said he would be very pleased to hear from any local businesses or organisations that can help with donating equipment or fundraising.
