AN appeal has been launched for funds to equip the Librarian?s Cottage wing of Tavistock Museum with new exhibits and facilities. As well as making improvements to existing features in the museum the money raised will be used to create a ground floor entry with disabled access and a DVD theatre in which a film will recount the town?s history and local mining industry. The volunteers who work at the museum say they have already achieved a great deal in the last three years on the limited budget afforded to them by grants and donations, but are still striving for further improvements. Roderick Martin, secretary of Tavistock and District Local History Society, sees the museum?s evolution as essential if the town becomes part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site currently under evaluation. He said: ?If the bid is successful the town could be headed for the sort of tourist bonanza being experienced by the seaside towns of the Jurassic coast in East Devon and Dorset. ?In order for the town to meet the expectations of visitors today it will need to have the first-rate museum which we aim to provide.? The appeal, which is hoped will raise £20,000, is being directed at local businesses and residents. Those wanting to get involved can do so by contacting Roderick Martin on 01822 616503.
