THE MP for Central Devon has welcomed a commitment from Prime Minister David Cameron to end public subsidies for newly planned onshore wind projects if the Conservatives win the next General Election in 2015. Mr Cameron also pledged that his party would change planning rules so that communities and local councils are given a greater say on proposed new farms and so that greater protection is given to an area's valued countryside and heritage. Welcoming the announcement, Central Devon MP Mel Stride said: 'Enough onshore wind has been planned to meet the Government's legally-binding renewables target for 2020 and if any more are to be built it should be without Government subsidies. 'Many people in my constituency have been worried that wind farms could be approved locally without their views being properly heard and without fully taking into account the damage done to our countryside.' Mr Stride has previously spoken out in the House of Commons about the knock on effect that turbines have on local house prices and businesses that rely on tourism.
