EIGHT years as the area?s MP will be reflected upon by West Devon and Torridge member John Burnett, who will be guest speaker at the next Motivation South West Okehampton Business Breakfast in March. Liberal Democrat Mr Burnett, who is standing down at the next general election, will be speaking to members of Okehampton?s business community over breakfast on Friday, March 4. The breakfast takes place between 7.45am and 9am at Okehampton Conservative Club on a Friday, rather than the usual Wednesday to accommodate the re-arranged speaker. Mr Burnett has lived and worked in West Devon and Torridge for more than 25 years, formerly as a lawyer, farmer and breeder of Devon cattle. He and his wife, Billie, have four children; Alice, Laura, Robert and George. He was educated at Ampleforth College, and subsequently held a commission as a Royal Marine Commando, during which time he saw active service in Borneo and the Middle East. Mr Burnett studied law at the London College of Law, and after qualifying, practised in London before moving to Devon in 1976. He became senior partner of his Devon law firm some years ago and was for 12 years a member of the Law Society?s National Revenue Law Committee. He is also an active member of his local Roman Catholic Church. The event costs £10 to attend.
