FINCH Foundry, the last working water forge in England and once one of the largest tool manufacturers in the South West, had a visit from its local MP.
The National Trust property in Sticklepath, which flourished in the late 19th century and continued for several decades before closing in 1960, is now a popular tourist attraction with its machinery in action during demonstrations and its large water wheels, huge tilt hammers, grindstone and other tools all on display.
Central Devon MP Mel Stride, who as a hobby is qualified to give tours of some of the UK’s most historic landmarks, was given a tour by foundry manager Ben Shapcott and met other staff and volunteers.
Mr Stride said: ‘As an avid historian it was a real treat to spend time at Finch Foundry and discuss its plans for the future, as well as its role in bringing visitors to the area. I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in local history and a great day out to take advantage of having this wonderful attraction on their doorstep.’
Mr Shapcott said: ‘It was great to show Mel around and take him back to Victorian England. We have an excellent programme for school trips as well as regular visitors.’
