Yelverton U11B v Cornwood U11s
YELVERTON U11B side enjoyed a solid 15-run opening partnership by Jonathan Hawley and Lewi Stokes to get the Mosquitoes off to a good start against Cornwood Oaks. A battling 22 runs by Jack Smyly towards the end and some wayward bowling provided a competitive 290 runs from the innings. The Oaks laboured to score runs in the face of some good opening bowling by Jack Smyly (2-13), Bel Germon (1-7) and Toby Halloran (1-6), however they steadied the ship for the next 11 overs, despite some enthusiastic work in the field from Stephanie Hutchins and some excellent work behind the wicket by 'keeper Lewi Stokes. Yelverton found it difficult to break their resistance during this period of the game, until a flurry of 4 wickets in the last 4 overs restored parity, with Lewis Hutchins (1-15), Sudan Sudhakar (1-11) and Jonathan Hawley (1-5) all adding to the wicket tally. Cornwood consequently finished on a total of 208.
Yelverton U11B v Yealmpton U11s
THE Mosquitoes lost the toss for the second time this season and were again asked to bat first against Yealmpton. The opening partnership of Jonathan Hawley and Lewi Stokes went about their business with aplomb, as an excellent 28-run partnership got the Mossies off to a great start. The next three pairs all protected their wickets superbly and chipped away at the score to reach a season-high total of 296. Only one wicket fell during this innings, ironically to the 'loan player' Ben Marks, who returned figures of 1-8 from his two overs.
It was always going to be a very difficult task for the Yealmpton players to rally in the face of such a good score and that was highlighted by the Mossies taking five wickets in the first four overs. Sudan Sudakar (3-4), Ben Charlton (2-19) and Jai Nowak (2-18) all doing the damage on this occasion. Most impressively, the wickets included an excellent Toby Halloran catch at Cover, as well as a Lewi Stokes catch and then a stumping.
The Mosquitoes took wickets at regular intervals, particularly when captain Jonathan Hawley brought himself into the attack - he finished with season's best figures to date of 4-4, during what was a superb spell of bowling. Lewi Stokes then continued his excellent match with another stumping off Lewis Hutchins' bowling (1-1) and two other catches. Ben Charlton also held on to a well hit drive to make a great catch at Mid-Off and Izzy Cooper patrolled the backward point area with enthusiasm to deny the batsmen much needed runs.
Yealmpton kept their heads up and hit a number of fours towards the end of their innings, but a final score of 171 was never going to trouble the Mossies, who won by a 125-run margin. Jonathan Hawley and Lewi Stokes were both nominated as 'players of the match', as their performances were particularly outstanding.
Plympton U15s v Yelverton U15s
Plympton won the toss and elected to bat first against Yelverton U15s. David Ackford (2-19) struck with his third delivery dismissing Rossouw for a duck to give the Whirlwinds a good start.
The first bowling change saw Will Johnson (1-17) replace Dan Cooper and his first delivery claimed the wicket of O'Higgins, caught by Ed Degg at mid-on. Jay Warner (2-33) got a wicket with his second ball and followed it up with another wicket off his fourth delivery — both caught by Dan Cooper at backward point, to leave Plympton on 39 - 4 off seven overs.
However, some good batting and lusty blows by Plympton's, H Loxdale and J Webber saw them put on 50 for the fifth wicket, before Matthew Adams (2-18) bowled Loxdale for 17 with the score on 89. Plympton managed to take the score to 119-8 off their 20 overs
In reply Whirlwinds Ben Pearson was run-out in the first over by a direct hit from O'Higgins at cover. David Ackford and Dan Cooper (9) put on 22 for the second wicket before Cooper (9) was well caught by Todd Rossouw off Dom Mulberry at mid-off.
The introduction of O'Higgins saw the dismissal of Douie, well caught over his head by Mulberry at backward point. David Ackford (25) followed in the same fashion in O'Higgins' next over to leave the Whirlwinds on 65-4 after 15 overs and seemingly out of the contest. However, some enterprising running by Will Johnson and Jay Warner put pressure on the field as the pair put on 22 in short order, until Warner (16) was bowled by Rossouw with the score on 87 after 18 overs. Needing to score an unlikely 33 off 2 overs, Will Johnson & Matt Adams swung the bat and the pair scored 15 off the penultimate over.
Needing 18 off the last over, Matt Adams struck consecutive boundaries as the pair scrambled 11 runs to leave the Whirlwinds short by seven runs.
