THERE was an encouraging number of regular and new entrants at Whitchurch Village Flower and Produce Show on September 21.

New entrants were particularly noticeable in the baking classes, with male entries much increased on last year, perhaps as a result of a popular baking programme on relevision.

Whitchurch Primary School was well represented, not only in the children's classes but also with their gardening club entering in the fruit and vegetable classes, which were well supported.

Whitchurch Community Hall was crowded with people studying the displays and enjoying refreshments.

Prizes were presented by Catherine (Kit) Thomas, president of Whitchurch Flower and Produce Show Committee.

Prizewinners were:- Goodland Cup for flowers and foliage class, Pam Smith; Margaret Clark Trophy for floral art, Kate McCormick; Mary Williams Cup for cookery, Kate McCormick; Anthony Trophy for preserves, Pauline Anstead; Gidley Cup for vegetables, Rob Rawlings; Lister Trophy for handicrafts, Margaret Lawrence; Clark Bond Cup for photography, David Mayne; Leach Trophy for overall show winner, Kate McCormick; Diamond Jubilee Trophy for overall winner gentleman exhibitor, shared between Rob Rawlings and David Mayne; Sheila Plumb Cup for highest score in men only classes, Alistair Ley.

In the children's classes the award for the highest score in the age 7 and under class went to Olivia Luckham and the award for the highest score in the 8 to 11 class to Isabelle Cousins.

Next year, the show will return to its usual date of the second Saturday in September.

The committee expressed thanks to everybody who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the show a success.
