A FURTHER £1,000 contribution towards the West Devon dog warden scheme was agreed by members of Tavistock Town Council?s properties committee at their meeting last week.
The borough council, which runs the scheme, hopes to make the warden?s post full time as opposed to part time and has asked all participating town and parish councils to consider increasing their contributions to pay for it.
West Devon?s environmental chief Nick Payne told the committee the service was likely to be ?very much more effective? if the warden?s hours were doubled and the whole of the borough could be covered.
?The warden will be able to undertake educational initiatives, as well as be more available to parishes to deal with problematic dog owners and more readily responsive to problems as and when they arise in your parish,? said Mr Payne, who asked the council to contribute an extra £1,900 a year.
Cllr Jane Ramsey said she was impressed by the work carried out by the dog warden.
?He does do a good job,? she said.
Cllr Alison Clish-Green said West Devon Community Safety Partnership had carried out a survey which revealed that dog fouling was one of the top concerns of people living in the borough.
Cllr Norma Woodcock proposed the council offer the borough £1,000, which a view to reviewing the contribution next year.
