A CELEBRATION of needlework, art and traditional rural crafts goes on display to the public in Princetown this Saturday as the sixth annual Moorland Exhibition gets under way.
The event, which runs until August 26, not only includes a wide display of arts and crafts but also a variety of workshops.
These include lessons in spinning, silk paper making, crocheting, bookbinding, embroidery and painting, plus many more.
The first Moorland Exhibition was staged in 1996 in the Business Centre of the old Duchy Hotel.
Now held in Princetown Primary School, which allows full disabled access, the exhibition has gone from strength to strength.
Organiser Audrey Vigni said foot and mouth restrictions on Dartmoor were a worry at one point.
'But everybody wants us to do it, so here we go,' she said.
'The exhibition continues to provide an opportunity to show the work of local artists and craft workers centred on Dartmoor.'
The event, which includes a wide variety of exhibits including ceramics, paintings, knitting, lace making, bead work, sugar craft and wood turning, is non-profit-making and organised on a purely voluntary basis.
Doors open at 10am and entry is £2 for adults and 50p for accompanied under-11-year-olds. Advance tickets are £1.50, children free. Doors close at 4pm. Any profits after expenses will be donated to Princetown School.
Tickets, brochures and bookings forms are available from 2 Bellever Close, Princetown, PL20 6RT — please send an A5 stamped, addressed envelope.
