THE mines around Mary Tavy will be the main focus at a talk on the history of metal mining on Dartmoor this month. Archaeologist, historian and Dartmoor authority Dr Tom Greeves will be the speaker at the talk on Wednesday, September 26, organised by the recently-formed Mary Tavy Historical Society. The group has been inaugurated by enthusiasts in the village with the aim to research and catalogue the local history before records and artefacts are lost and while people with personal memories of the recent history of the area are still around. Aspects of the area?s past the group intend to investigate include mining, agriculture and, the village school. It is hoped to create a database and source of further research for future generations. The talk will begin at 7.30pm in the Coronation Hall. Light refreshments will be available and tickets may be purchased on the door or obtained from the society?s secretary.
