THE first in a series of ?stone carrying? walks across Dartmoor is due to take place this Sunday, led by Tavistock?s deputy mayor Caroline Keane. Based on an ancient Zimbabwean tradition of stone carrying, the walks provide an opportunity for people to take time out from their normal routines and come together to experience their environment. Walkers are invited to bring their own small stones or pebbles with them. Sunday?s walk starts from the stone circle at Merrivale and will finish at Lord?s Restaurant in Princetown, a distance of around three miles. At the end of the walk there will be a storytelling and drumming workshop to introduce people to the history and traditions of stone carrying. Caroline Keane and Chanda Nyerezani, whose Zimbabwean drum rhythms set the atmosphere for the walks and workshops, hope people of all ages will join them on their special journey. Come prepared for moorland walking ? strong boots, warm clothing and waterproofs are recommended. The walk begins at 2pm and should reach Princetown by 4pm.
