IT is said that we should not mix religion and politics. However, sometimes I believe that this is necessary. The Rev Stephen Cook did so in the Reflections column (September 18) and more recently Terence Scarborough in the Letters page (October 9). Both correspondents refer to the importance of our Christian heritage when thinking about sovereignty. The question is put to us; should 'backward looking' be condemned? What is our purpose as individuals and as a nation? For hundreds of years the UK has been 'rooted in God.' Under the rule of the EU we have been handing over all our freedoms stage by stage. Soon the EU will present member nations with 'Quantitive Majority Voting.' (QMV). This means that no individual nation will have a veto in 43 aspects of running a country. This process will start on November 1. Our elected MEPs represent us and of course UKIP will make ite voice heard in no uncertain manner. Again in May next year we can all excercise our right to vote in the General Election. In Central Devon, Mel Stride MP occupies a very safe seat. Or does he? V A Cushing Okehampton
