A SOLID game of hard tackling rugby unfolded as Tavistock took on OPM at Ford Park Road on Sunday.

The two sides were very evenly matched in the midfield as strong running from both sides was met by a wall of tackles. Tavistock did well keeping the ball alive in numerous attempts to pierce the solid OPM defence.

The Tavistock front row of Lois Peake, Tom Gardener, Joe Inman and Cameron Georgel coming on for his debut as hooker in the second half all put in a tough shift as every inch of ground gained was fought for.

Coupled with the Tavistock backs of Dan Pett, Harry Richardson and Bryn Bourton and fly half Noah Berridge supplying hard yards to the jinking wingers Harry Edwards and Henry Varndell-Dawes resulted in a  pair of tries for Henry and one for Louis Peake.

Better shape and defensive discipline saw Tavistock thwart several piercing runs from OPM who moved the ball around well, eventually finding enough space to run in three tries and equalise right on full time.

A SECOND short game carried on in exactly the same vein as the first but with Tavistock's energy reserves helping them to pin OPM back in their own half for most of the game, with Tavistock applying strong pressure on the OPM ball carriers.

The usual wall of tackles coming in from Harry Richardson sweeping the OPM attacks off into touch with an unfortunate loss of control of the ball at the last minute thwarting Harry from a well-earned try, having stormed his way through the OPM defence.

Jack Baker and James Kenyon put in solid performances whilst sharing the scrum half jersey with James being duly rewarded for his efforts after pulling off the ball from a ruck and darting in a try in the blindside corner.

His tenacity earned him the man of the match.

Further tries from Loius Peake and Henry Varndell-Dawes completed the close win for Tavistock.

TAVISTOCK travelled to Plymouth on Sunday for their first ever fixture against OPM's.

This new junior club made Tavistock very welcome with tea and pasties and the use of excellent facilities.

Fielding a squad of nine, early tries were scored by Toby and Ted as Joeby fitted in well in his first U8s match.

Great  tagging by Isaac, Tom and  William and the beginnings of an organised defence kept OPMs out and the score was 4-0 at half time, with further tries from Toby and Isaac.

Playing up the hill in the second half, Callum and Liam set off on some good attacks well supported by Joe. Joe came close to scoring before William scored an excellent aggressive try. OPMs came back with two tries of their own.

Five or six close calls prevented Tavistock from scoring again, as the game became a bit chaotic as the referee tried to play an open game.
