The Wolferstans' South West Winter Foursomes competition resumed at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday after the Christmas break with a quarter final match. The weather was suitably inclement, with strong winds to test the ability of the players. Home players had mixed fortunes — Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke mastered the conditions well, to beat their opponents Nick Weight and Mica Carroll(Launceston) 7 and 6. Finishing off their opponents with birdies on the down-wind 11th and 12th holes. Mica had the compensation of winning the prize for the last remaining lady in the competition. Home professional Tim McSherry and partner Gary Hawking had a poor start going five down, but clawed their way back on the back nine. However they were unable to make any more impression on their opponents, David Willacy and Neil Pitcher(Bigbury), who sealed the match on the 16th hole, winning 3 and 2. Professional Ashley Moon, with brother Martin, also had a close game, being two down after 11 holes, but managed to edge in front on the closing holes to win one up. The plate competition knock-out stage started with eight pairs contesting for the prize. The Exeter pair A Pilcher and J Breading were too strong for Tavistock assistant professional Wayne Basford and partner Steve Bryant winning 6 and 5. Steven Rimes and John Dodd (Wrangaton) went through to the semi-finals, as did Dave Garry and Dave Purnell (Yelverton), and Andy Price and Clive O'Sullivan, also from Yelverton. The semi-finals will be played on January 27, when the two professionals will battle it out for the £1,000 prize for the last remaining professional, and for a place in the final; current holders of the trophy, Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke aim to take another step to defending their title.
