TAVISTOCK Memory Café has had another successful year in providing peer group support to those living with dementia and their carers in Tavistock and surrounding areas.

June Wildman, a spokesperson for the group, said: 'We were fortunate enough to be the Mayor's Charity of the Year this last year which has helped us to continue to provide activities for those living with the disease and we have also received grants with which we have been able to provide opportunities to make the lives of carers a little less stressful.

'Apart from our usual "tea, cakes and chat" time at the beginning of our meetings, we have held such activities as reminiscence work, chair dancing, table top games such as bagatelle and shove ha'penny, lots of musical entertainment, virtual journeys (slide shows) and visits to such places as a donkey sanctuary, pantomime and afternoon tea at Lopwell Dam.

'Carers' support is important to us. We have a regular session where they can let off steam and receive information and advice with visiting speakers on topics of interest such as wills and powers of attorney.'

If you would be interested in attending — either independently as a carer of someone with dementia or with that cared-for person — or becoming a volunteer, please contact June Wildman or Heather on the Tavistock Area Support Services number, 01822 616958.

The café meets once a fortnight from 2pm to 4pm at the Anchorage Centre, Church Street, Tavistock.
