I WAS interested to read the article (February 13) concerning a recent work of fiction which predicts a flood along the north coast of England worse that that which occurred in 1953.

I taught on Canvey Island in 1951-2 but in 1953 I was at Benfleet Secondary School (later the King John School). This school became the centre for hundreds of refugees who were rendered homeless by the floods.

I well remember the horror stories of families being awakened in the early hours of the morning by sea water flooding into their homes. There were also pictures of dead bodies in the branches of trees in the popular press.
