A PROMINENT Tavistock citizen, who died last November, is now remembered in a community garden in India.

Former town mayor Gill Gorbutt was a member of environmental group Westden and became the chairman of its trustee.

She was also the chair of Tamwed which was set up to support and link with communities affected by the tsunami in South India.

Now Gill has been remembered with the creation of a medicinal herb garden and carved stone in a community garden in Tamil Nadu in India.

Tamwed now works with four community organisations on health, climate change, sanitation and climate change.

The latest project, to promote the production and use of traditional medicinal herbs in family plots, was set up by Tamwed committee member Diana Lee, who is also a qualified herbalist.

While Diana was in Tamil Nadu, working with the community group delivering the project, she formally opened Gill's memorial garden in the quiet corner of a training centre.

Tamwed is grateful to those who gave donations in Gill's name and which were shared among some of the causes she supported.

Diana is pictured opening Gill's memorial with some of the community health workers trained and adminsitered with funds raised by Tamwed's supporters.

There will be a fund-raising Indian meal with games at the Old Chapel in Albaston at 7.30pm on April 24. Tickets are £3.50 via [email protected]">[email protected] or 01822 832897.
