The Robin Fenner Memorial Match Chairman?s X1 2 Carlsberg Managers X1 2 A LARGE gathering descended on Langsford Park last Saturday for the Robin Fenner Memorial match between the Chairman?s and Carlsberg Managers select that incorporated a players? reunion. In great respect for Robin there was a minute?s silence in memory of him ? broken only by one of his favourite pieces of music, Procal Harum?s Whiter Shade of Pale. On paper it looked a complete mis-match of sides with many of the Chairman?s select looking forward to retirement from work let alone playing with the Carlsberg Managers, Craig Smith and Ian Southcott relying heavily on their players who have turned out for them this season. But it was a lighthearted affair with both sides allowing each other to pass the ball around to put on a show of delightful football. It was no surprise that the more youthful manager?s side took the lead when Dave Symonds headed home from a James Steer cross after 20 minutes but the Chairman?s side did ever so well to contain them to a single goal lead at the break. Both Carlsberg managers selected themselves with both of them carrying life long injuries. Ian Southcott had been on from the start and Craig Smith came on for the start of the second. He only lasted eight minutes but at the end of it outpaced Darren Babb and Craig Hodge to control the ball on the edge of the area to roll the ball into the net past Steve Wardle. A rather dubious penalty from referee and explayer/manager Alan Johns who saw an infringement by Johnny Watters on Karl Gatcum allowed Mike Honey to slot the spot kick past Andy Meeds on the hour. It was Tony Cawse who levelled for the Chairman?s side with 15 minutes remaining as he lashed home a shot that gave Meeds no chance. Honours were kept even when Wardle pulled off a great save from a Steer effort in the closing stages to bring to an end a very entertaining game.
