While some of Tavistocks finest trees have been removed, ten more were planted around Walkhampton?s Memorial Field during National Tree Week. Using grant money remaining from the recent extension to the car park, the Memorial Hall organising committee planted a mix of Red Maples (Acer Rubrum) and Silver Maples (Acer Saccharinum). Each tree is supported by a steel frame specially manufactured by Steel Tech. Following the boundary of the new car park, the long hedge alongside the Dousland Road and providing shade to the children?s play park, it is expected the trees will provide a wonderful backdrop to the Memorial Field, especially in Autumn. During their first few years, the trees are being adopted by Walkham Valley Scouts and Cubs group, who will be watering them in the summer months. Work on the car park extension was carried out by John Pengelly and Son, from Chillaton, over the summer, the same company that dug the holes for the trees. Grants for both the car park and the tree planting were provided by National Lottery Awards for All, West Devon Borough Council and Burrator Parish Council. The final part of the improvements will be the provision of lighting covering the new car park.
