STAFF from the Redvers Unit at Okehampton Community Hospital were at the show, highlighting the work of the unit and how it helps elderly people remain happy and active at home for as long as possible.

The unit has a consultant psychiatrist, community psychiatrict nurse and a team of support workers.

The Redvers Memory Service holds carers' support groups, providing advice and general information, on the second Tuesday of the month. Staff support people in their own homes enabling them to cope with the varied issues relating to mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's Disease, vascular dementia and other more unusual types of dementia.

There are also regular memory sessions, which help sufferers learn how to help improve their memory.

Community psychiatrict nurse Maureen Abbood said: 'Dementia is an increasing problem. We are here to help and people need to know we are here. We don't have an in-patient department at the hospital, but we are there promoting care within the community.'

A special awareness day is being held at the Redvers Unit on August 31 between 2pm and 4pm.

This will be an informative afternoon to enable local people, who are worried about memory problems, find out what is available in their hospital, and in the community.

There will also be songs from the music, movement and memory group and refreshments will be provided.
