FOR the first time in 18 years Devon were English County champions, and members of Tavistock Golf Club played a big part in the success.

Following a shock win over Yorkshire by 6-3 on the opening day, they went on to defeat Berks, Bucks and Oxon by 5-3 (Alan Gawman 2, Damian Gee 1, James Ruth 2).

In the crucial last match Devon won 5-4 against Leicestershire and Rutland by 5-4 (James Ruth 2, Alan Gawman 1, Damian Gee 1).

Results in the weekly stableford were: Division 1, 1, W Reed 39pts; 2, R A Potts 38; 3, A Priddle 37.

Division 2, 1, J Thewlis 42 pts; 2, A C Cooper 40; 3, R J H Ward 38.

Division 3, 1, M Youlden 43 pts; 2, Adam Burbidge 39; 3, Tom Reed 37.
