THE SAVE our toilets campaign continues in Northlew on Monday (October 21) when the issue is the subject of a public meeting in the Victory Hall.
There has been an outcry in the borough over West Devon Borough Council?s plans to close a number of public conveniences in a bid to save £9,000 in the budget.
Public toilets in Northlew, South Zeal and Sampford Courtenay all face the axe but local residents are petitioning the council in a bid to reverse the decision.
The meeting in Northlew, which will be attended by two representatives from the borough council who will be available to answer questions, begins at 7.30pm.
Although the meeting will focus on Northlew, parish councillors from other villages threatened with closure of their public loos will also be attending.
In a previous article in the Times chairman of Northlew Parish Council John Grierson said there had been no consultation and the borough council had gone on some ?dubious figures? from four years ago.
He said it would affect visitors and traders and would cause problems when public events were held in Northlew.
Local postman Tony Jones said he spent all day around and about Northlew and he used the loos every day, which were ideally positioned near to the post office and stores.
?The nearest public toilets are in Okehampton and Hatherleigh,? he said.
Pat Durston, who used to run the post office and stores said one of the most common questions asked by visitors coming into the shop was ?where were the public toilets?.
?Public toilets are one of those vital things we need ? not so much for the villagers but all the reps and people travelling around, the tourists and the walkers.
?When you think about how much is wasted by the council it seems wrong to do away with a public service like this.?
