THE Mayor of West Devon will be commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings tomorrow (Friday). Cllr Christine Marsh will lead a short dedication at the council's offices at Kilworthy Park in Tavistock where the Union Flag will be raised in honour of those who took part the D-Day Landings in 1944. Cllr Marsh said: 'I have chosen the Royal British Legion as my Mayoral Charity for my year in office so it is really important to me to mark this significant anniversary in some way. 'D-Day was such an important moment in our national history and deserves this civic recognition. 'Above all, I would like to remember the sacrifice made by the thousands of British, American and Commonwealth troops who gave their lives during the landings.' The Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 was the largest amphibious assault ever launched. More than 75,000 British, Canadian and other Commonwealth troops landed on the beaches alongside the United States and the Free French, in an allied invasion force of more than 130,000. Events are taking place across the UK to mark the anniversary.
