TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held its annual dinner at the town's golf club last Saturday, attended by 50 people. Guests included Tavistock mayor Caroline Keane with her guest Hilary Williams. Mike Prout, chairman, said there had been no major developments for the club during the year but general maintenance included refurbishing of courts 6,7 and 8 and painting, working together with the council who own courts 7 and 8. With the Plymouth and District League competitions there were five men's teams, three ladies and four juniors. Results had been mediocre for the seniors as team captains had difficulties at times, fielding sufficiently strong teams. For the men in division 1 the A team held its position but the B team was demoted. In division 3 the C team held its own. In division 5 the D team was demoted but could stay depending on the outcome of a dispute. In division 6 the E team was demoted. With the ladies, in division 2 the A team are demoted. In division 4 the B team are promoted and in division 5 the C team held their position. The juniors did well with all four teams holding their positions with the A and C teams runners up in divisions 1 and 3. Mike said coach Richard Stafford had settled in well and was doing a good job with the juniors which was reflected in the league results. There was a good entry for the annual club tournaments with a high standard of play and some new winners. An outstanding performance was by junior Sara Lucas who won both junior singles events (U15 and U18) and the ladies' singles in the seniors. A major event had been the hosting of the Tavistock Junior Open Tournament with more than 60 entries run over two weekends. There had been 16 friendly matches which included two new fixtures, Moretonhampstead and Avonwick, with juniors participating to gain experience. Social events included a beginning of season skittles match, a barbecue on finals day, a new venture with a bowls match against the Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club, and a talk by Rick Read on a survey in the Antarctic. Mike expressed thanks to the committee and to president Norma Woodcock and vice-president Bill Smyly for their support. He also thanked honorary members, Mike Jefferies, Ken Watkins, David Isaac and Bill Smyly for their contributions over many years. Cllr Keane presented the winners' cups and the cup for outstanding member of the year which went to Phil Harbottle for his contribution as men's captain and for three years acting as ladies' captain. Viv Lles, who organised the event, presented a bouquet to the mayor. In the afternoon for the ninth year running the traditional fundraising competition took place for the cup donated by Mike Blagrove in memory of his wife, June ,and was won by Roma McMahon and Simon Thomas.
