Thorverton 2nd XI v Whitchurch Wayfarers 2nd XI THE toss was going to be crucial, as the wicket was known for favouring the side batting first. The Whitchurch captain lost the toss, but to his amazement, Whitchurch were put in to bat. The steady opening partnership of Hodge and Warwick made slow progress against some accurate bowling. After the loss of Hodge, Heatley made his way to the wicket. Warwick and Heatley shared a partnership of 50 before Warwick was out trying to increase the pedestrian run rate. Former Whitchurch Colt prodigy, Tom Jackson, making his first appearance of the season, then joined Heatley. Jackson?s first two scoring shots were of the highest order, one through mid off and the other a rocket through the covers, both going to the boundary. After 30 overs, the score was a mediocre 92-2. Heatley and Jackson started to get on top of the bowling as the bowlers began to wilt in the heat. Heatley maintained his majestic form, narrowly missing out on a well deserved 100, ending on 91 not out. Jackson was not to be outshone, and dispatched the bowling to all parts of the ground. The pair shared a supreme stand of 131 before Jackson was caught out in the deep on an impressive 79. Whitchurch finished up 246-6, a whopping 154 runs coming from the last 16 overs. In reply, the energetic opening bowling attack of 17-year-old Daymond and 16-year-old Churchill put Thorverton on the back foot. They were replaced with even younger bowlers, Restall who at 15 bowled without any luck, and Sherrell who at 14 bowled some great leg spin. Only Denford of Thorverton showed any resistance, making a big hitting 58 before he was trapped lbw. With Denford gone and the tail exposed, Daymond wrapped it up in double quick time; Thorverton all out for 128. All the bowlers were fantastic, but Daymond stood out returning figures of 7 for 33 from 11 overs. Whitchurch took the maximum points, 20, while Thorverton took 5. Saturday: Whitchurch entertain promotion chasing rivals Ivybridge.
