CAMPAIGNERS objecting to a planning application to erect a mobile phone mast 130 yards away from a children's park in Yelverton have a further ten days in which to make their feelings known to the authorities.

Dartmoor National Park Authority has extended its consultation period regarding the mast until Friday January 2.

Orange, which withdrew a previous application to erect a mast on the village green following furious opposition, has applied to the Park's planning committee to erect the mast and ground-based equipment at the roundabout in Yelverton. The site is just across the road from Yelverton Village Park.

Objectors say they are concerned about health risks associated with mobile telephone masts.

Yelverton resident Ian Minchin, who is acting as a spokesman for residents opposing the scheme, said a petition objecting to the mast now had more than 650 signatories.

Mr Minchin urged any residents in the Yelverton area who were opposed to the scheme to write to Dartmoor National Park Authority with their objections, if they had not already done so.

Mobile phone company Orange has acknowledged public concerns about radiation levels emitted by masts, but says there is 'no conclusive evidence' linking them with long term health risks.

A spokesman for the company said Orange operated within 'stringent international standards' which were set by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection guidelines.
