VILLAGERS and parishioners in Meavy are coming together to celebrate almost 1,000 years of history this month.

St Peter's Church stands by the village green and nearby Meavy Oak which is almost as old. Adjacent is the Church House, now the thriving Royal Oak Inn — one of only two inns in the country owned by parish councils.

This Saturday, June 12, the church will be open for all to see the Norman carvings, medieval font, roof bosses and the interesting stained glass windows and the stories behind them.

In the graveyard there are many fascinating tombstones. People can try their hand at bell-ringing, and have light refreshments in the pews.

All are welcome from 10am till 4pm, and admission is free.

Any donations will go to the rainwater goods restoration fund of the church — the event will end at 4pm with a short service.
