A MAN from Peter Tavy and his father, a World War Two veteran, travelled to Normandy as part of the 40th anniversary commemorations of D-Day on June 6. Richard Staniland travelled to the French region with his 94-year-old dad from Northampton and Normandy veterans as part of a Royal British Legion trip. Mr Staniland was at Bayeaux Cemetery on the Friday morning where the Queen and Royal family were present, and then in the afternoon at the Sword Beach memorial service where world leaders attended, including American president Barack Obama and Russian president Vladimir Putin. The next day Mr Staniland visited war cemeteries and was given crosses to place at graves as an act of remembrance. He said: 'As I have lived in Devon and Tavistock area for nearly 40 years and love the area greatly, I was happy to leave my crosses at the grave of a soldier of the Devonshire regiment and at the graves of soldiers from the Duke of Cornwall regiment as a mark of respect to all the soldiers of Devon and Cornwall.'
