TAVISTOCK Pannier Market is likely to open on Mondays instead of Sundays next summer, following a trial period of Sunday opening during 2003.

Town councillors heard at their meeting last week that traders felt Sunday trading had not been a success, although the market would be open on Sundays during the run up to Christmas this year.

Cllr Mandy Govier told members of the properties committee that traders were happier with the idea of trading on Mondays, not Sundays.

She said: 'This would only be in the summer period.

'It would be supported by the tourist information office, who have said a lot of people come down here on Saturdays and use Mondays to use the town. The doors get rattled and people ask why the market isn't open.'

Cllr Caroline Keane, committee chairman, was in favour of the idea.

'I have never supported Sunday trading, but that's my personal view,' she said.

Cllr Ted Sherrell said: 'Certainly Monday being a normal day in the town I could imagine being better for trading and in principle, I see nothing wrong with Monday opening.'

The committee agreed that Monday opening should be trialled and put in the market calendar for 2004.
