A MAN found injured alongside the body of a woman at her home near Stoke Climsland has been arrested in hospital on suspicion of murder, police said.

The body of 55-year-old Amanda Sorrell was found at her home in Pempwell on September 27.

Police were alerted after Miss Sorrell, an area manager with Cornwall Council's Registration Service, failed to turn up for work.

Her body was found in a downstairs room, as was a 65-year-old man who had suffered serious injuries.

The suspect, who has not been named, underwent surgery and is in a stable condition in Derriford Hospital.

A police spokesman said the man was arrested by police over the weekend and when he was well enough he would be taken into custody, but it was not known when this would be at this stage.

A post-mortem examination on the body was carried out last week but the results have not been released.

Colleagues of Miss Sorrell paid tribute to her this week. Allan Hampshire, head of public health and protection for Cornwall Council, said: 'We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Amanda's death.

'Amanda has worked for Cornwall Council since 1997, firstly as a registrar and then, from 2007, as an area manager within the registration service.

'She was incredibly committed hard working and very talented. Her calm positive manner and sense of fairness meant that she was well respected amongst her friends, colleagues and customers.

'Amanda made a huge contribution to the registration service, particularly through supporting her colleagues during a period of significant change.

'Amanda will be deeply missed by everyone in the registration service and by colleagues throughout Cornwall Council.

'Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with Amanda's family and friends at this difficult time.'
