THE 1st South Zeal Scout group entered two teams for the exciting Chipmunk Challenge across Exmoor and came home with a host of prizes as well as making history.
Each team of four young people aged between 11 and 15 had to pack all that they needed for a weekend of hiking across the moor and carry it in their rucksacks.
The challenge tested the young people's route planning, navigation, cooking and camping skills, as well as expecting them to walk approximately 24 miles of hilly terrain. After they had reached base the team had to submit a log book.
Altogether 16 teams from all over the south west entered this challenge.
The 1st South Zeal teams were delighted to win 1st and 2nd place in the camping section and 2nd and 6th in the overall competition.
The girls team were particularly pleased to have made history as the first ever all girls team in Chipmunk Challenge's 20 year history and also because they were the youngest team in this year's competition.
They were also the first team to include twins.
Both teams prepared well for the event with the invaluable help of Bill Murray who had volunteered to assist with the older Scouts within the 1st South Zeal group.
