IN REGARD to your report 'Town backs sports complex' in last week's edition — surely something as important as this warranted front page coverage. It would seem to me that the town council has well and truly sold out Simmons Park to the planners from West Devon Borough Council.
There is a pocket of land owned by Devon County Council near to the present squash courts, which would make an ideal site for a swimming pool — why can't negotiations take place with Devon County to acquire this site?
Our swimming pool needs replacing of that it is certain, but if the current lottery bid fails, and our pool is closed for whatever reason, Devon County Council will then need to provide means of getting the schoolchildren of Okehampton to a swimming pool as part of their curriculum — an expensive exercise that could be avoided.
The well thought out conceptual plan put forward by Mr Woodgate at the recent town council meeting needs serious consideration as a plan for lottery funding.
The planners have already made a mess of St James Street and North Street — are we going to let them get away with it yet again?
Okehampton residents must make their voices heard before it is too late.
