MAKING a sundial and water clock will be part of a packed programme of medieval fun at Okehampton Castle on June 10 and 11.

Costumed duo 'Heuristics' will be inviting visitors to take a look at time as well as customs and lifestyles in the Middle Ages.

From noon each day people can hear about early methods of telling time by the moon and learn about the evolution of clocks from the Clepsydra (water clock) through to the earliest form of mechanical clock found in most towns by the 1930s.

A host of medieval games will be available throughout each afternoon for visitors to try and Heuristics will also take a light-hearted look at the medieval use of herbs in medicines and weird and wonderful cures.

At around 3.30pm children will be invited to sort out fact from fiction as they take part in a play about St George — they will discover that the dragon tale associated with England's patron saint originates from the 'Golden legend', the first non-fiction book printed on the Guttenberg press in the mid 15th Century.

Admission is £3 for adults, £2.30 for concessions and £1.50 for children. Under fives get in free.
