ANYONE with a head for heights may like to contact the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity this weekend, which is looking for hundreds of adventurous volunteers to make a daring 100ft abseil at Castle Drogo this Sunday.

The charity, which provides trained dogs to alert deaf people to everyday sounds around the home, has recently opened a new office in the South West.

They are keen to raise awareness of the charity both to raise funds to train more dogs, and also encourage more applicants.

If you have ever wanted to try abseiling, this is a perfect opportunity to do so. Absolutely no experience is required to take part in this challenge as full training is given. To take part costs just £19 in advance or £25 on the day, with participants encouraged to raise as much sponsorship as possible for the charity.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to sounds that hearing people often take for granted, such as the alarm clock, doorbell or smoke alarm. The dogs alert their recipients by touch, then lead them to the sound source, except in the case of the smoke alarm when the dogs will lie down to indicate danger.

Andy Cook, charity deputy chief executive, said: 'The demand for hearing dogs has increased to the extent that there is now an 18-month waiting list.

'The monies raised by these brave abseilers will allow us to select and train more rescue dogs to help deaf people.'
