AFTER reading the provocative headline to Mr Godfrey-Brown?s letter in last week?s Times I feel that I must respond. It is clear that he was the victim of an unfortunate incident when some irresponsible individual riding a bicycle on the pavement bumped into him and gave him some verbal abuse when rebuked for his actions. I suspect we are talking here possibly of a young person riding a bike with little regard for his action. I agree this type of behaviour is inexcusable and is a sad reflection or today?s society. What I do take issue with is Mr Godfrey-Brown branding all cyclists as habitually riding on pavements and thinking they have a ?Divine Right? to do so. I appreciate that he was upset by his experience but let?s put it into perspective and not make a crass, unsubstantiated, sweeping statement that this is a regular occurrence practised by all cyclists. The majority of serious cyclists are law-abiding road users, including many whose exploits raise countless thousands of pounds for charitable causes, including many frequently featured in the Times (see page 13 of last week?s issue), who I am sure are offended by such an accusation. By all means vent your anger on the individual concerned but please let us keep some measure of reality to the situation. Michael Rice Downside Okehampton
