TAVISTOCK's biggest small event takes place at the Mayflower Galleries this month with an exhibition of miniature paintings by members of the Hilliard Society.
This is a unique opportunity to see the work of many of the country's giants in the field of miniature painting.
There will be about 200 pictures on show, most of which are for sale.
The exhibition runs at Mayflower Galleries, West Street, until October 9, daily from 9.30am-5.30pm, except Sunday.
Gallery owner, Tony Whitehead, said he was delighted to host an exhibition of this quality and importance.
He said that the show, which would surely dwarf all others, was being formally opened by the Mayor of West Devon, Robin Pike, at a private view, (tomorrow) September 21.
The finished works amount to an image totalling only a few square inches.
The Hilliard Society was formed in 1982 by Tavistock's accomplished miniaturist, Rosalind Pierson, and colleague Sue Burton, who has recently been elected to the presidency of the World Federation of Miniature Artists for a five year term.
The art of miniature portraits has its origins in the 16th century when wealthy members of society would commission pictures of their loved ones, which could be easily carried in a pocket or locket.
Award-winning Dartmoor portrait miniaturist Gillie Hoyte-Byrom will have work in the exhibition.
