The wall of Rosemary Cottage on Newbridge Hill at Gunnislake on the A390 has shown signs of movement and deterioration and contractors for Cornwall Council, CORMAC, has decided to take immediate action to ensure the safety of the public.
The road will be closed from Monday, August 6 for between three and ten days — it will not be open for traffic use at any time during the closure.
The announcement came out today (Wednesday) as a surprise to local residents and councillors.
A spokesperson for CORMAC Contracting said: ‘We have been progressing with the monitoring and investigation works on the retaining wall at Rosemary Cottage and it is now showing signs of further movement and deterioration. We must therefore take immediate action to prevent it worsening and to ensure the safety of the public.’
Repairs will involve taking the section of wall down to approximately one metre in height and battering the retained ground behind to a safe angle.
The remaining wall will be supported in front by large concrete blocks, the road cleaned and reopened as quickly as possible back to a single carriageway under priority control.
The spokesperson added: ’We have investigated methods whereby the wall could be temporarily supported until strengthening works are undertaken, but are of the opinion that a road closure for these works is the least disruptive to road users and will reduce the need for further closures during the subsequent strengthening works.
‘Our intention was always to keep those affected by our works fully informed in advance of commencement, however, given the urgency of this particular work, we haven’t been able to be as pro-active as we would like to be.’
It is anticipated that the majority of the later, second phase of strengthening works will be undertaken with minimal additional disruption.
