Jewson South Western League

Callington Town 1

Holsworthy 3

A CLUB record crowd of 432 packed into Ginsters Marshfield Parc for this first Cornish leg of the Cornish Capers Easter Ground Hop.

The match — played on a damp surface which, even in its state at the start, was a credit to the backroom staff at Callington, who worked all week to get it playable — did not, however, electrify those present as both sides found the going difficult.

The visitors, battling for second place in the league, were more than a match for the increasingly confident Callington side. It took 25 minutes for Holsworthy to break the deadlock. Town's defence failed to clear a Holsworthy cross and Andy Clarke netted from close range with keeper Wayne Wormald stranded.

Callington are not ones for lying down and a period of pressure saw them equalise ten minutes later from the penalty spot. Teenage striker Dominic Farris was cut down in the area and Gary Smith calmly despatched his 14th goal of the season.

The visitors went in at the break ahead courtesy of another piece of poor defending after 44 minutes. This time it was Neal Robertson who netted after being the first to react to a loose ball.

Holsworthy pressed their advantage early in the second period and extended their advantage on 55 minutes when Ian Rowe knocked a strangely quiet Stuart Wakenshaw off the ball and calmly beat Wormald from the edge of the area.

Callington should have reduced the arrears late on with Gerry, Farris and Smith all having chances, but the North Devon side held on to secure a notable double over Callington to move up to fourth in the league.

l On Saturday St Austell visit Ginsters Marshfield Parc, kick-off 3pm, while on Tuesday Millbrook are the visitors, kick-off 6.30pm. The following weekend sees a double header of away matches with visits to Penzance on Saturday and Truro City on Sunday.
