A special tree-planting ceremony took place on Friday in the new Jubilee Arboretum at The Garden House, Buckland Monachorum.

The children of the village's St Andrew's Primary School planted a magnolia 'David Clulow', a beautiful specimen tree which had been selected to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

This magnolia is recognised to be one of the finest of its species, and will eventually grow up to eight metres and produce large pure white blooms each spring.

The Jubilee Arboretum, which has been in the planning for two years, unofficially opened to the public earlier this month. Work is still in progress, and about 50 trees have been planted so far with another 90 to go in this autumn.

Thousands of historic varieties of daffodil bulbs reflecting the daffodil-growing industry of the Tamar Valley will create additional colour next spring.
