A WEST Devon pub has earned success at the National British Pie Awards, taking home a silver award.

Chef David Moxham of the Castle Inn at Lydford, received a silver award for his Dartmoor beef and ale pie at the annual British Pie Awards which took place at Melton Mowbray.

The annual competition, organised and hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie association, received 619 pies produced by bakers and butchers from across the country. Pies were judged by celebrity chefs, pie experts and top food writers, including Rachel Green, Tamsin Day Lewis and Charles Campion.

David, who received his award in the savoury pie (hot) category, said: 'We are delighted to get recognition from some of the best food experts in the country, putting our pies up there with the cream of British pies. It is also testament to the quality of our local produce with our beef coming from Dartmoor Farmers Association.'

Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, Matthew O'Callaghan, said: 'We are thrilled with the standard of pies that we tasted.

'The association organises these awards to celebrate the heritage of the British pie and it makes us very proud seeing the quality and variety of pies presented.

'We hope this helps to encourage consumers to continue enjoying authentic regional produce.'
