OKEHAMPTON firefighters came to the rescue of a jackdaw who was stuck down a chimney last Friday.

The crew was called to the scene at the request of the RSPCA who had been contacted by the owners of a house in Castle Cottages, Okehampton, after they became concerned.

The bird eventually flew to freedom after two and a half hours: ?We rescued the bird by putting ladders to the roof and catching it in a net inside the chimney,? said Okehampton station officer Ian Donovan.

?It was a young bird which had gone halfway down the chimney and got stuck, but it was fine.?
