BLACK Torrington got an early Christmas present this year after receiving a lottery grant for the village hall.

The £5,000 grant will go towards fixing the acoustics problem in the hall and help to stop the echo users have been experiencing.

Secretary of the village hall committee, Vera Bryant, said: 'We are extremely grateful for the grant and it will be great to get the echo fixed.

'We are always working hard and are glad of any support from residents who wish to help us out.'

The village hall committee is hoping to raise a further £5,000 towards future work on the hall and have been holding monthly craft and table top sales on the last Saturday of every month.

The hall hosted a bingo evening last Saturday and is also hired out to the badminton and football clubs, who use the shower facilities available.

Black Torrington Primary School have use of the hall during their PE period and it is occupied by the youth club on Fridays.

There will be a plant sale on Saturday May 1, which in the past has proven extremely successful, raising between £800 and £900.

A plastic bull race is also held every couple of years, where the bulls are released down a hill. Each bull has a number and a prize is won for first, second and third.
