THE Wharf public toilets in Tavistock re-opened recently following a complete refurbishment.

The improved facilities have a separate family room and disabled area, as well as the usual ladies' and gents'.

The toilets, along with those in Tavistock's Guildhall, are at the beginning of a long-term refurbishment project to improve all 15 public convenience amenities in West Devon.

Cllr Robert Sampson, chair of West Devon Borough Council's environment and community committee, said: 'It is good to see the completion of this scheme. The provision of public conveniences is not a mandatory duty for West Devon but is a service for residents and visitors which we wish to maintain and improve under this long-term scheme.'

Public toilets have long been a target for vandalism, and even in the short time since the Wharf toilets were re-opened the disabled area has fallen victim to this anti-social behaviour, forcing the council to lock the facility at night.

However, it is hoped that by working even more closely with the police, and with help from a vigilant public, this type of behaviour in and around public conveniences can be stopped.
